Cook's Free-Kick Strike Lead's Men's Soccer Past Western Conn., 1-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (October 24, 2007)Colin Cook’s (Wilbraham, Mass.) direct free-kick goal from just outside the 18 yard box proved to be the game-winning tally as the Springfield College men’s soccer team defeated visiting Western Connecticut State, 1-0, on Wednesday evening at Brock-Affleck Field.

With the win, the Pride improves to 8-7-2 and finishes the regular season with a better than .500 record for the first time since 2001. The loss drops the Colonials to 5-11 on the season.

After a scoreless first half, the Pride was awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Cook took the direct free kick from the right side and found the upper ’90 on the left corner to give the home team a 1-0 advantage with 56:42 on the clock.

B.J. Sturdivant (Bear, Del.) picked up his fourth shutout of the season after making four saves in goal. With the game in the balance late in the contest, Sturdivant made a sprawling kick save on a Matthew Lupinacci shot with 11 minutes left in the game to preserve the shutout.

The Pride awaits to see who it will play in the upcoming New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Tournament. The first round game will be held on October 31.
