Men's Lacrosse To Take Part in the Fifth Annual Open Pantry Fall Fest

Lacrosse at Open Pantry Springfield, Mass. - September 26, 2008 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team will once again participate in the fifth annual Open Pantry Fall Fest on Saturday, Oct. 4 at East Longmeadow High School.

The Pride will be one of three collegiate teams to participate as the University of Massachusetts Minutemen and Westfield State Owls will all play intra-squad scrimmages. UMass will play at 9 a.m. followed by a boy's youth clinic at 10:30 a.m., before the Pride will take the first at at 11:30 a.m., and the Westfield State Owls at 1:30 p.m.

“We appreciate this opportunity to showcase our program to Western Massachusetts,” said Springfield head coach Keith Bugbee. “It is also a great chance to be able to run a charity event to benefit an organization like the Open Pantry.”

Admission to the games is a donation of five canned goods.

This is just one of many efforts by the Springfield College student body to give back to the community. On September 18, over 1,900 students volunteered in Springfield College's 11th annual Humanics in Action Day, a time of concentrated community service.

The Pride, which advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season before bowing out to eventual national runner-up Cortland State, will open up its season at Endicott on February 25.

Open Pantry overview: "Open Pantry Community Services, Inc. is a private non-profit social services agency that provides comprehensive services for people who are homeless or disadvantaged in the greater Springfield area. One of our programs which is essential to the people Open Pantry serves is the Emergency Food Pantry (EFP). In 2007, the EFP distributed enough non-perishable food to feed over 27, 235 people and nearly half of them were children. With higher fuel costs, food prices and cold weather coming it is becoming more difficult for us to continue to provide these life-sustaining services to the residents of the greater Springfield area. Due to the Springfield's high poverty rate there is a great need for emergency food services and coordinated service referrals. We greatly appreciate your continued support for the people we serve."
