SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 23, 2007 – Amherst College senior designated hitter Jared Banner went 4-for-6 with five runs batted in (RBI) and three runs scored as the Lord Jeffs defeated the Springfield College Pride this afternoon in non-conference action at Berry-Allen Field, 22-7.
With one more New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest left to its regular-season (Tuesday at Clark), SC currently stands with a 9-18 overall record and a 4-7 league mark. The Lord Jeffs improve to 12-9 overall on their season with today’s victory.
Amherst College sophomore lefty Ryan Platzbecker improved his record to 3-0 on the season, tossing seven innings and allowing just five hits and one unearned run on seven strikeouts. Platzbecker was given a multitude of run support from the first inning on, as the Lord Jeffs plated seven runners in the top half of the opening frame.
Amherst junior catcher Neal Allar equaled Banner’s production at the plate with a 4-for-6 performance of his own. In four hits, Allar added four scored runs and three RBIs. Sophomore third baseman Brendan Powers added four RBIs in the tilt, collecting two hits in five at-bats with three runs scored. Also adding to the cause was junior outfielder Evan Bruno, who came off the bench to go 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
For the Pride, senior leadoff man Chris Stack (Albany, N.Y.) recorded a team-best two hits in his five at-bats on the afternoon. Seniors Doug Maier (Long Valley, N.J.) and Josh Charpentier (Fairhaven, Mass.), playing in their final regular-season home games at Berry-Allen Field, each came off the bench to register two RBIs. Freshman shortstop Joey Kropa (Cranford, N.J.) came on in the game to go 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
SC will travel to Clark University tomorrow afternoon, April 24th, for its regular-season finale at 3:30 p.m. before it begins play in the NEWMAC Tournament on Thursday, April 26th.
