Men's Gymnastics Finishes Third at USAG Championships

Colorado Springs, Colo. - March 26, 2010 - The Springfield College men's gymnastics team finished third at the 2010 USAG Championships on Friday evening at the Air Force Academy. Air Force tallied a score of 342.350 - the fourth-highest ever - to win its first USAG national title in the 23-year history of the event.

The Falcons bettered the field by over seven points, as 13-time national champion, William and Mary, finished second with a score of 335.150. Springfield placed third with a tally of 329.350, while Navy finished fourth with a score of 327.450.

The Falcons' victory marked the first time since 1993 that neither William and Mary or Navy has won the USAG national team title.

In the championship among club teams, Arizona State tallied a score of 326.200 to win its fourth straight national title - and its 13th in the past 14 years. Washington placed second with a score of 295.800, while Brockport (289.550), Texas (260.350) and MIT (247.250) rounded out the scoring. The Sun Devils' Riley Barclay won the "club division" all-around title with a total of 80.350.

Springfield had two of the top five finishers in the all-around competition as Ty Evans took third with an 83.650 and Josh Fox placed fifth after totaling 82.950.

The meet also served as a qualifier into the event finals which will take place on Saturday. Fox had the top qualifying score in the floor with a 14.900. He will compete in the finals. Other SC scores on floor included Evans (14.500), Jimmy Pezzino (14.200) and Matt Tocchio (13.800).

Fox (12.950) also qualified for the finals in the pommel horse and the still rings (13.700), Evans scored 13.650 in the still rings.

Pezzino had the second-highest qualifying mark in the vault with a 15.600 and he will be one of two Springfield competitors in the finals, including Evans (15.350), Others who finished in the top 16 in the vault included Keith Stumpf (15.150), Fox (15.000), and Josh Spencer (14.800). Evans is the defending national champion in the vault.

Evans (13.700) qualified for the finals in the parallel bars, The SC finalists in the high bar include Evans, who had the second-highest score of 13.800, and Fox (13.400).

A top six finish will allow one to become an All-American.
