Baseball Falls to Wheaton in First Game of Doubleheader

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 1, 2006 – Springfield College senior shortstop Chris McCarthy (East Longmeadow, Mass.) hit a leadoff homer in the bottom half of the first inning, his third home run this week, but it was just one of two total Pride hits as Wheaton College downed SC, 7-1, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest this afternoon at Berry-Allen Field.

Today’s conference action at Springfield College was originally scheduled as a doubleheader, but the second game was postponed due to rain. The second game will be played tomorrow afternoon, April 2, in a 1:00 p.m. start at Berry-Allen Field.

Wheaton junior lefty Chris McDonough tossed all seven innings of the game, allowing just two Pride hits and one run while striking out four. McDonough improves his record to 3-1 overall on the season.

The Lyons (11-6, 2-1 NEWMAC) plated six of their seven runs in the first three innings, as junior third baseman Scott Guillerault hit a two-run homer in the top half of the first inning to give Wheaton an early 2-0 advantage.

Sophomore catcher Adam Laplante led off the top half of the second inning with a home run to right field to put the Lyons up, 3-1. Senior designated hitter Mark Baumer added another home run, this time to center field, to spark a three-run third inning for the Lyons. In all, Wheaton scored seven runs in the game on 13 hits.

With the loss, the Pride has now dropped its past four games, as SC is now 7-8 overall on the season and 2-1 in NEWMAC play.
