Women's Swimming & Diving Goes To 7-1

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Jan. 14, 2004 – Springfield College junior Emily Strout (Edgecomb, Maine) won two individual events and swam a leg on a first-place relay team as the Pride defeated Smith College, 159-133, in a dual meet tonight in the Art Linkletter Natatorium.

Strout placed first in the 100 backstroke (1:05.08) and the 200 backstroke (2:17.85) as the Pride improved to 7-1 in dual-meet competition this season. Strout joined senior Claire Mueller (Newburgh, N.Y.), senior Beth Byron (Haverhill, Mass.) and sophomore Alicia Hart (West Hartford, Conn.) on SC’s winning 200-medley relay team (1:58.34). Mueller also placed first in the 500 freestyle (5:34.93).

Other SC winners included junior Megan Nickerson (Washington, N.Y.) in the 1000 freestyle (11:27.11); senior Marybeth Kuliga (Sanford, Maine) in the 100 breastroke (1:17.20); sophomore Emily Phillips (North Windham, Conn.) in the 200 freestyle (2:03.87), and freshman Meaghan O’Hara (Bedford, N.H.) in the 100 freestyle (57.14). Sophomore diver Lacey Feduke (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) won on the one-meter board with a national-qualifying score of 263.65. Senior Jessica Defoe (Monson, Mass) was second in the 50 freestyle (26.27) behind Smith’s Sabrina Beason (Los Angeles), who won in 26.07.

For Smith (1-2), Beason, Rhonda Stratton (Woods Cross, Utah), who placed first on the three-meter board (213.30), and Lauren Seidman (Westfield, Ind.), a winner in the 200 butterfly (2:18.49), were among six individual event winners.
