CHANDLER, Ariz., March 12, 2007 – Two runs in the bottom of the ninth helped lift the William Paterson University baseball team (2-2-1) to a 10-9 victory against Springfield College (0-3) this afternoon at the Greater Phoenix (Ariz.) Invitational.
William Paterson senior Ted King led off the ninth by reaching first on an error by the shortstop, and was lifted for pinch runner Jim Gregory. Freshman Mike Guadangom advanced Gregory to second on a sacrifice, and sophomore Will Courter sent him home with a single. Following a popout, Courter moved to second on a balk, and then scored the winning run thanks to a Don Hays' single.
Hays finished 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, while senior Don Reinertsen was 4-for-5 with a double, one run scored and two RBI.
Pride junior first baseman Casey Federico (Agawam, Mass.) had a very solid day at the plate for SC, going 4-for-5 with two doubles, three runs scored and three RBI. Junior right fielder Rex Cone (Bristol, Conn.) hit a two-run homer in the first and went 2-for-4 on the day with two runs scored. Junior third baseman Ryan Hingston (Windsor, Vt.) also collected two hits in four at-bats with a double and two RBI. Senior leadoff man Chris Stack (Albany, N.Y.) went 2-for-5 with three runs scored.
Junior Steve Schlitzer started on the mound for the Pioneers, allowing six earned runs while striking out four in 6.1 innings. Senior Christian Miranda gave up one earned run while striking out two batters in 2.0 innings of relief, and classmate Mike Santana earned the victory, striking out one in the final 0.2 inning of work.
Senior righty Derek Hodder (Hamden, Conn.) pitched the entire game for SC, going eight and two-thirds innings in his first start of the season. Hodder gave up 16 hits and 10 runs (nine earned) to start his season 0-1.
The Pride will continue its Arizona trip when it faces UW-La Crosse on Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 13) in a 3:30 p.m. start (eastern time).
