Head Coach Toby Coffin Springfield, Mass. – August 1, 2011Toby Coffin G’01, currently the head coach of the varsity girls’ tennis team at Longmeadow High School, has been named the varsity men’s and women’s tennis coach at Springfield College, according to Springfield College Director of Athletics Cathie Schweitzer.

The appointment is effective in late August. Coffin replaces Tim Losee, who resigned in June.

Coffin is returning to Springfield College where he earned his master’s degree in physical education in 2001. In his two years at SC, he concentrated in athletic administration and assisted the women’s tennis program.

Coffin has accumulated a wealth of experience in coaching tennis as well as in athletic administration since then.

“It is with tremendous enthusiasm that I begin my tenure as head men’s and women’s tennis coach at Springfield College,” said Coffin. “I look forward to meeting all the returning players and graduate assistant coaches as we work to make this the best tennis program possible.

“As a 2001 graduate of Springfield College’s masters program in physical education, I believe I have a firm understanding of the ‘Springfield Way’,” he continued. “ I’m also looking forward to joining an outstanding athletics department and coaching staff which has a storied history in education and athletics. I am fortunate to become a part of it.”

“We were seeking a head coach whose values align with Springfield College’s mission, and who has the ability to lead our teams to success both on and off the field,” said Schweitzer. “Toby has shown the ability to coach both men and women with equal success. He has proven he can motivate student-athletes to excel. He is also well connected in the high school tennis world which should bode well in recruiting.”

Coffin also currently teaches physical education and health to students in grades 6 through 9 at the New Leadership Charter School in Springfield, Mass. He is also the middle school’s boys’ basketball coach, and an 8th grade class advisor at New Leadership, and has been so since 2007.

From 2003 to 2007, Coffin had been the Director of Athletics at The MacDuffie School in Springfield. He directed all aspects of the athletic department, including planning, organizing, scheduling, budgeting, hiring, and evaluation of 15 coaches. In addition, he coached varsity boys’ basketball, middle school boys’ soccer, JV boys’ basketball, and varsity boys’ tennis at MacDuffie.

From 2001 to 2003, Coffin taught physical education and health to students in grades K-10 in the Hatfield Public Schools in Hatfield, Mass. He also coached varsity girls’ soccer to a league title in the first year of the team’s existence.
