Sean Smith Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - April 3, 2011 - Frank Calabrese went 3-4 at the plate and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Springfield College baseball team to a 4-2 win over Clark on Sunday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.

Springfield took two of three from Clark in the weekend series to improve to 8-11, 2-7 in league play, while the Cougars dropped to 12-10, 2-7.

Despite playing on its own diamond, Springfield played as the away team in today's contest, which was moved to Springfield after originally being scheduled to be played at Clark on Friday.

Springfield's bats exploded for 10 hits in the game, led by Calabrese's efforts. Mike Corletta and Mike Micik each went 2-4 and Mike McGowan picked up the win after tossing 3.1 innings of one-hit ball in relief of starter Alex Williams. Williams lasted the first 4.2 innings, giving up two earned runs off two hits while walking six and striking out five. Adam DeFelice pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the save.

For the Cougars, Peter Lewis recorded two of their three hits in the afternoon, while Shawn LaMothe added the other. Benjamin Seel took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, off nine hits in 2.2 innings. Phillip Bertocci then quieted Springfield's bats as he allowed just one hit in the final 6.1 innings.

Clark scored in the first inning as Matthew Bohl and Scott Hollingsworth drew back-to-back walks and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Lewis. Nicholas Kellogg then drove home Bohl on a groundout to the shortstop as Clark grabbed its only lead of the afternoon.

Springfield answered back with two runs in the top of the second. Micik led off the second with a double to left and would score on a Calabrese single to right. Calabrese would eventually come around to score on a Mike Sirani single up the middle.

In the third, Springfield tallied four hits to score another two runs. Calabrese and Mike Corletta each produced RBI singles to plate teammates Micik and Brian Harris.

The Cougars took advantage off some Pride miscues in the fourth to score the last run of the contest. After Lamothe led off the inning with a single, Williams struck out the next two batters. However, Williams then walked Andrew Agostini, hit Jeremy Gerber, and allowed Lamothe to score on a wild pitch. After another walk to Bohl, Williams finally got out of the inning after getting Hollingsworth to fly out to center.

The teams would combine for just one hit in the final five innings as Springfield held of for the 4-2 win.

Springfield will next hit the diamond on Tuesday afternoon when it travels for a league-contest at Wheaton beginning at 3:30 pm.
