Men's & Women's Basketball To Compete For NEWMAC Championships This Week

NEWMAC Championship Springfield, Mass. - February 25, 2014 - The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships will be in full swing this week with men's and women's basketball both battling for conference titles and an automatic berth into the upcoming NCAA Division III Championships.


The sixth-ranked women's basketball team will kick off the NEWMAC tournament on Wednesday, traveling to No. 3 Coast Guard for the NEWMAC Championship Quarterfinal at 7:00 p.m.

In the other two quarterfinals, No. 2 Wheaton will host No. 7 MIT while No. 4 Wellesley will host No. 5 Babson.

In two meetings this season with Coast Guard, the Pride have lost by a total of just five points. The two teams closed out the regular season on Saturday with the Bears taking a 43-42 edge. In the first meeting of the season, Ava Adamopoulos (Ludlow, Mass.) provided a spark off the bench with 12 points in just 14 minutes, while Jaimie Bickelhaupt (Brookfield, Conn.) scored a season-high 23 points.

Smith College earned the top seed in the tournament and will host the semifinals on Saturday March 1 and the championship on Sunday March 2. The Pioneers will take on the winner of No. 5 Babson and No. 4 Wellesley in the NEWMAC Semifinals on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. If Springfield beats Coast Guard on Wednesday, the Pride will advance to the NEWMAC Semifinals to take on the winner of No. 7 MIT and No. 2 Wheaton on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

The winners of both semifinals will advance to the NEWMAC Championship on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Winner #4/5 Seed vs. #1 Smith - 1:00 p.m.
Winner #3/6 Seed vs. Winner #2/7 Seed - 3:00 p.m.

Championship:Sunday, March 2 at Smith College:
Semifinal Winners - 1:00 p.m


The men's basketball team earned a first-round bye after earning the third seed in the NEWMAC tournament. The Pride will tip off with No. 2 Babson on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in the NEWMAC Semifinals which will be hosted by WPI.

Top-seeded WPI will take on the winner of No. 5 Emerson and No. 4 MIT in the other semifinal on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Springfield and Babson have squared off twice this season, splitting the pair of meetings. The Pride beat Babson on the road in overtime in the first match up of the season while Babson came to Springfield in mid-February and escaped with a 67-61 victory. Robbie Burke (Cheshire, Mass.) was big in the OT win over Babson, which was ranked 25th in the country at the time. Burke tied his career-high of 22 points and had 10 rebounds.
