Men's Lacrosse Shuts Down Lasell, 11-3

Jake Jones Box Score

Newton, Mass. - April 8, 2009 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team improved to 3-0 in conference action picked up a victory at Lasell College, 11-3, on Wednesday afternoon. Jake Beebe led the Springfield offense with four points off a goal and three helpers, while Joe Heney added two goals and an assist.

Springfield's defense continued to dominate league foes as it has now allowed just eight total goals in three conference games. Tom Albano recorded the win between the pipes as he tallied eight saves in goal.

The last time these two schools met, in last season's Pilgrim League Tournament Semifinals, Springfield also limited the Lasers' attack to only three goals as well.

Springfield improved to 5-4, 3-0 in league play, while the Lasers finish the day with 1-2 league mark, 3-7 overall.

Over thirteen minutes elapsed before the first goal was scored in the opening quarter. Springfield’s Ryan Thibodeau put the Pride on the board with an unassisted tally with only 1:39 remaining in the period. Lasell did not waste time responding as Brian Yepez (Hillsborough, NJ) answered just 22 seconds later to tie the game ending the first quarter.

Springfield ran away with five unreturned goals in the second frame push for a 6-1 gap by halftime. Beebe took a dish from Chris Jez to put the Pride ahead 49 seconds into the stanza. Pat Cavanaugh attacked next at 13:33, followed by Kyle Louer whose catch-and-shoot mark proved to be the game winner.

Jake Jones and Joe Macchi each notched points before the break to give Springfield a five goal advantage heading into intermission.

Lasell’s Dave Buhloes fired one in past Albano at 7:45 in the third to break the Pride’s run. Buhloes then assisted on Chris Bulkley’s man-up tally just one minute later.

The Pride scored four more goals before the final buzzer, but Albano kept the Lasers from scoring for the remainder of the contest, making eight saves in the victory. Lasell’s goalie Mike Kelliher made eleven saves in the defeat.

Beebe led for the visitors with four points in the matchup while Heney provided an additional two goals and an assist. Yepez and Buhloes each finished with two points for the home team, while Adam Foss controlled the face-off 10 of 16 times and added 10 ground balls.

The Pride return to action as it continues conference play on Saturday with a home contest against Mass. Maritime at 12:00 pm.
