Women's Swimming and Diving Drops Dual Meet at Amherst

Callie Phillips Complete Results

Amherst, Mass. - February 2, 2014 - Despite impressive performances from Kellie Pennington (Monson, Mass.) and sophomore Callie Phillips (East Longmeadow, Mass.), the Springfield College women’s swimming and diving team fell to host Amherst College 180.5 – 117.5 on Sunday afternoon.

Pennington was impressive again in the 50 freestyle, posting a time of 23.91 and taking first place over Amherst senior Lulu Belak (New Canaan, Conn.), who finished in 25.45. The senior also teamed up with Phillips, Kelsey Poole (Westfield, Mass.) and Delaney Dyjak (Ludlow, Mass.) to take first in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:39.48.

Phillips took home a first place finish of her own in the 200 freestyle, finishing with a time of 1:57.36.

Freshman Christine Legsdin (Westminster, Mass.) took second place in the 50 backstroke with a time of 29.20, while senior Nicolle Straqualursi (Dedham, Mass.) placed second in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 31.72.

As for the diving events, senior Jennifer Thompson (Cheshire, Conn.) took first place on the one-meter board, with a score of 289.95 and on the three-meter board, with a score of 279.00, both meeting national qualifying standards. Sophomore Melanie Avdoulous (East Longmeadow, Mass.) placed third on the one-meter board with a score of 226.20 and Kyra Breitweiser (Westwood, N.J) placed third on the three-meter board with a score of 247.80.

Up next for Springfield, the Pride will head to WPI to compete in the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships from Feb. 21-23.
