Matt Cavalieri Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - December 14, 2010 - Senior Matt Cavalieri poured in a season-best 28 points to pace the Springfield College men's basketball team to a 69-57 win over visiting Connecticut College in Blake Arena on Tuesday evening.

Springfield enters winter break with a 6-4 record as it posted six wins in its last seven contests. The Camels had their four-game winning streak come to a close as they drop to 5-4.

Cavalieri had his way all night as he picked apart the Camel zone, shooting 11-17 from the floor en route to 28 points to go along with a game-high eight boards. Darvis Rankins connected on four from beyond the arc to finish with 16 points, while Ryan Coburn stuffed his stat sheet with 12 points, six assists, five blocks, and four rebounds. Billy Harkins added five helpers and four points as he directed the Pride offense.

For the visitors, Matt Vadas posted 18 points to lead the way, while Rob Harrigan was the lone other member of the squad to reach double figures with 10 points. As a team, Connecticut College hoisted 30 three-pointers, hitting just eight. Taylor Hanson chipped in with six caroms, five points, and four assists on the evening.

Springfield shot 55.1% from the floor, including going 14-23 (60.9%) in the second stanza, while the Camels shot just 37.7%. Springfield also held a 35-24 advantage on the glass.

Springfield jumped out to a 9-3 advantage at the 16:41 mark after a deep three by Rankins, forcing Connecticut College into the first timeout of the contest. An inside bucket by Pete Banos made it a two-point game at 14-12 with 10:47 remaining, only to have Springfield open up an 11-5 run. The spurt was capped off by a Harkins lay-in after a gritty offensive rebound inside with 5:43 on the clock. However, the Camels took advantage of five Springfield turnovers in the final 3:54 to claw back in the contest. A triple from the right wing by Mason Lopez with nine ticks left in the half made it a 31-28 ball game heading into the half.

The hosts wasted no time grabbing momentum in the second half as it rattled off a 6-2 burst after a Coburn inside bucket 2:08 into the half to force the Camels into a timeout. The Pride's lead would then ballooned to 12 at the 13:13 mark after a pair from the charity stripe by Cavalieri. Connecticut College would get no closer that 10 in the second half, which they did twice, the last time coming on a Harrigan triple with 6:37 on the clock to make it a 52-42 contest. A lay-up by Michael Adams in the final minute gave Springfield's its largest lead, 69-52, before the Pride closed out contest with a 15-point margin.

The Pride will not hit the courts again until January 1, 2011 when it takes on Roger Williams at 5:30 pm in the Hampton Inn/Naismith Classic.
