Men's Swimming and Diving Second After Day Two at NEWMAC Championships

NORTON, Mass., February 25, 2006 - The United States Coast Guard Academy used four more event wins Saturday night to extend its lead following the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Swimming and Diving Championship's second day of competition at Wheaton College's Balfour Natatorium. The team standings remained unchanged from day one, with Coast Guard leading the way with 647 points. Springfield College trails the Bears with 538 points and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) follows with 505.5. The three-day meet continues with tomorrow's trials at 11:00 a.m. and concludes following the night's finals at 6:30 p.m.

Of the seven events completed, Coast Guard recorded NEWMAC All-Conference team performances in six of them, including a pair of runner-up finishes. Junior Ryan Caple (Littleton, CO) and sophomores Bobby Brown (Ballston Lake, NY) and Doug Fallon (Elkton, MD) topped the field with NCAA Division III national meet provisional qualifying times in the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard individual medley events, respectively. Fallon's 4:05.64 finish during the 400 IM set a NEWMAC Championship record, while Caple's trials time of 57.28 in the 100-yard breast also broke a meet mark. Brown capped his night by joining juniors Colby Schlaht (Anaheim, CA) and Jack Walsh (Newburgh, NY) and sophomore Jack Shadwick (Campbell Hall, NY) on the winning 800-yard freestyle relay team, as the foursome notched a provisional qualifying time of 6:53.44.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) junior Joel Rousseau (Pittsfield, MA/Taconic) highlighted the day with the meet's first NCAA Championship automatic qualifying standard in a swimming event during the 100-yard butterfly. Rousseau's best time came in the trials, reaching the NCAA's automatic mark while smashing the conference championship record in 49.29. MIT senior Matthieu Fuzellier (Bouffemont, France/Lycee Notre Dame de Bury) rounded out the individual event wins with a provisional time of 52.59 in the 100-yard backstroke, while Wheaton's 200-yard medley relay team, consisting of juniors Matt Hurley (Belfast, ME/Belfast Area) and Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering), sophomore Matt Jordan (Ellsworth, ME/Ellsworth) and freshman Chris Romilly (Washington, DC/Saint Albans), edged Coast Guard with a provisional mark of 1:34.74.

Other NCAA provisional records were met by Shadwick and Springfield junior Paul McCloskey (Brookfield, CT) in the 200-yard freestyle; Rousseau, Jordan and Springfield sophomore Roy Burch (Warwick, Bermuda) in the 100-yard backstroke; and MIT's 800-yard freestyle relay team, comprised of Fuzellier, seniors Josiah Rosmarin (Mansfield, OH/Mansfield Christian) and Grady Snyder (Goleta, CA/Phillips Exeter Academy) and freshman Peter Wellings (Palm Harbor, FL/Palm Harbor University).
