CHANDLER, Ariz., March 13, 2007 - Springfield College senior designated hitter Jeff Hewes (Groton, Conn.) went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in (RBI) and a run scored, but it was the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Eagles which scored twice in the bottom half of the eighth inning to sneak away with the 5-4 victory this afternoon at Gene Autry Field.
The Pride started the scoring in the top of the first inning as Hewes doubled to right with two outs, scoring junior first baseman Casey Federico (Agawam, Mass.). Hewes put SC up 2-0 in the top half of the third inning with another two-out double, this time to center scoring senior Chris Stack (Albany, N.Y.). The Pride struck again in the top of the sixth inning when sophomore second baseman Drew Michael (Longmeadow, Mass.) plated two runs with a two-out hit to center, scoring junior shortstop Tim Romeo (Whitesboro, N.Y.) and Hewes.
SC appeared to be in control of the game at this point, but UW-La Crosse fought back with three unearned runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to pull within one (4-3). In the inning, Pride senior starter Bob Schiaroli (Naugatuck, Conn.) was pulled for freshman reliever Mike Cole (Greenfield, Mass.) after hurling five and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits and three unearned runs.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Eagles scored two runs off of Cole to take the lead and eventually the game, 5-4. Cole falls to 0-1 overall on the young season, as SC falls to 0-4 on its trip with the loss. UW-La Crosse improves to 4-0 on the year.
The Pride will next face Montclair State University on Wednesday afternoon, March 14th, in a 3:30 p.m. start (eastern time) in Chandler, Ariz.
