Men's Track & Field Finishes Third in Springfield Meet

Springfield, Mass. -- January 22, 2011 -- MIT finished first of eight teams in an indoor track & field meet at the Springfield College Field House this afternoon and extending into the evening. Tufts placed second, and host Springfield placed third with 92 points.

MIT finished with 215 points as a team. Tufts was second with 99 points. Springfield came next with 92 points, followed by Wheaton with 77, UMass Dartmouth with 74, Coast Guard and Ramapo with 67 each, and Westfield State with 39.

There were several from Springfield College who contributed mightily to its team point total.

Chris Quetant placed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.42. Stephen Creamer took a fourth in the 1000 with a time of 2:37.05. Troy French finished second in the mile at 4:26.55. And Ryan O'Connell placed third in the 3000 with a time of 8:49.28.

In the 5000, Brian Fuller won with a time of 15:00.02. Sam Weiss placed seventh in the 55-meters at 8.50 seconds. In the 4x200-meter relay, SC placed second with the team of Tom Brognano, Garrett Sharnick, David Seronick, and Kyle Brown in 1:34.45.

The Pride placed third in the 4x400-meter relay with Brognano, Fernando Beltran, Alex Harrington, and Quetant in 3:30.98. In the 4x800-meter relay, SC finished fourth behind the team of French, Zach Pietras, O'Connell, and Creamer in 8:23.80.

In the field events, it was SC's William Ferguson leading the way in the high jump with his second-place finish at 6-3 1/4. Kevin Coyle took a first in the long jump with a leap of 23-0 1/4. Dylan Brock was sixth in the same event at 20-8. In the triple jump, Vijay Saxena was eighth at 38-4 3/4.

Finally, in the weight throw, co-captain Nick Hogan was fifth with a toss of 47-6 1/2.

Next Saturday (Jan. 29), Springfield travels to Brunswick, Me. to Bowdoin College for a meet with Bowdoin, Tufts, Colby, and MIT.
