Headley Shines As Men's Track and Field Competes at All-New England Championships

Amherst, Mass. - May 9, 2009 - Steve Headley ran the fastest time in the country this season in the 100 meter dash, crossing the finish line in 10.39, to highlight the Springfield College men's track and field performance at the 2009 All-New England Championships at UMass.

As a team, Springfield finished 15th with 24 points. In a meet of all the top track and field athletes in New England, the University of Rhode Island won the event with 103 points.

Headley blew away the competition with the fastest time of his career. The second place finisher clocked a time of 10.68, nearly three-tenths of a second behind the junior sensation. Teammate Matt Amendola finished in fifth with a time of 10.92. In the 800 meter run, Mike Griffin finished in 12th after clocking in at 1:53.22.

A pair of Springfield's relays earned All-New England honors as the 4x100 relay team of Amendola, Tom Brognano, Nickel Hay, and Headley finished second with the fourth-fastest Division III time in the country, a 41.27. The 4x400 relay took seventh in 3:17.17 to also earn All-New England honors, while the 4x800 relay team registered a 12th-place finish in 7:50.46.

Ken Klatka Ken Klatka, an associate professor of physical education at Springfield College, will enter his 38th season as head coach, and 44th as a coach overall, of the men’s track and field program in 2013-2014. He ranks among the nation’s most successful coaches, with an overall record of 447 wins, 156 losses, and two ties for an impressive .743 winning percentage.
