Tanner DeVarennes Boston, Mass. - April 29, 2014 - Springfield College's Tanner DeVarennes (Lee, Mass.) was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Tennis Rookie of the Year on Tuesday after a solid rookie campaign as a member of the Pride.

The Sport Management major led the Pride at the top of rotation this season, taking on the top competitor of opposing teams at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles with partner Joe Giannelli (Watertown, Conn.). DeVarennes went 8-5 in singles play this season, including two wins in conference play. Together, DeVarennes and Giannelli picked up six wins in doubles play, including two NEWMAC wins.

DeVarennes becomes the fourth member of the Springfield College men's tennis team to earn the conference's Rookie of the Year honor since 2001. Trevor Romanzi earned the honor in 2007, Andrew Constant in 2006 and Yuta Yoshi in 2001.

DeVarennes led the Pride to a 7-7 season, including a record of 3-1 on Spring Break in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The first-year was one of five freshmen on the men's tennis team this season.
