Kelleher, Veazie Named NFHCA All-Region

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Nov. 13, 2006 – The National Field Hockey Coaches Association released the 2006 Division III All-Region Teams today. Sophomore Jane Kelleher (Chatham, Mass.) and junior Brittany Veazie (Dexter, Maine) of the Springfield College field hockey team were both named to the NFHCA New England East Region First Team.

Kelleher and Veazie were two of the biggest contributors for the Pride this season. Kelleher lead the team in points, amassing 23 goals and 7 assists, while Veazie was impressive on offense as well, finishing the season with 18 goals and 7 assists.

Kelleher and Veazie were the two top goal scorers in the NEWMAC this season. Both Kelleher and Veazie were named to the 2006 All-NEWMAC First Team. Kelleher ranked first among NEWMAC players in overall points (51), while Veazie was third in that category (43). Veazie was also among the top NEWMAC players in assists, finishing the season sixth in the conference.

SC captured the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference title for the third straight season after defeating #1 seed Wellesley College, 5-4, in the finals of the NEWMAC conference tournament. The Pride’s season ended last Wednesday (Nov. 8) with a loss to New England College in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament. Overall SC posted a 17-6 record on the season.

Veazie has recently been honored as the 2006 NEWMAC Field Hockey Player of the Year. Veazie was named player of the year after her impressive play fueled SC’s run at the conference title. Veazie stepped up her game during the tournament, scoring four goals and adding two assists during SC’s semifinal and final round games. Veazie has also been named to the 2006 NEWMAC All-Academic field hockey team. Criteria for being selected to the NEWMAC all-academic team include having a 3.5-4.0 GPA, achieving second-year status at the institution, and being a member of the varsity team for the entire year.
