Women's Soccer To Host Mt. Holyoke In First Round of NEWMAC Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. October 28, 2005 - The Springfield College women's soccer team, which finished its 2005 regular season with an 11-4-2 overall record and 8-1 mark in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), has earned the two-seed in the conference's tournament, and will host the seventh-seeded team, Mount Holyoke College, on Saturday afternoon, October 29, in a 1:00 p.m. match in Springfield.

Wheaton College, which finished its NEWMAC regular season with an 8-0-1 record, has won its seventh consecutive regular season Championship and will host No. 8 WPI on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Other first round match-ups include No. 3 Clark University hosting sixth-seeded Wellesley College at 1:00 p.m., and No. 4 Babson College at home against No. 5 Smith College, in a 1:30 p.m. start.

In the Pride's only meeting with Mount Holyoke this season, SC defeated the Lyons, 5-0, in South Hadley, Mass., behind five first half goals. In that match, midfielders Lauren Peltier (Agawam, Mass.) and Margaret Mertzic (Barre, Mass.) each netted two scores for the Pride. Freshman defender Delaney Cantrall (Santa Paula, Calif.) also scored her first career collegiate goal in the win.

SC enters the NEWMAC Tournament playing its best soccer of the season, as the Pride remains unbeaten in the month of October (8-0). SC has run off eight-straight victories, all in conference play, as the Pride has not lost a match since September 27.
