Marian Rallies Past Baseball, 14-12, In 10 Innings

Phoenix, Ariz - March 15, 2009 - The Springfield College baseball team dropped a 14-12 decision to Marian in 10 innings in the RussMatt Greater Phoenix Invitational on Sunday afternoon. Mario Piscitelli went 3-3 in the game, including a two-run homer, to lead the Pride in the contest. With the loss, the Pride drop to 1-2 on the year.

Marian jumped all over the Pride as it scored six runs in the first two innings to take a 6-0 lead. The Pride answered with four runs in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to just 6-4. John Procopio highlighted the inning and he knocked home two runs on a triple. John Schmaltz and Zach Carhart each added RBI singles as well for the Pride.

Marian stayed hot with three more runs in the fourth inning to take a 9-4 lead, only to have SC respond with three runs of their own. Schmaltz added an RBI triple of his own to power the Pride in the inning, while Mike Robilotto added an RBI on a fielder's choice and Tatreau hit an RBI sac fly to bring in Springfield's third run of the inning.

Marian scored a single run in the fifth, but once again the Pride chipped away at the lead as it plated three runs in the bottom halfto even the game at 10-10. Procopio hit his second RBI-triple of the game as Springfield battled back to tie the game.

Springfield went on to take its first lead of the game in the eighth inning as Piscitelli blasted a two-run home run with two outs. However, the Pride couldn't close the door on Marian as they answered those two runs in the top of the ninth with a pair of their own on a two-RBI single.

Despite having the bases loaded with one out in the ninth, Springfield could not muster a run as the game headed to extra innings. In the extra frame, Anthony Porcaro singled to lead off the inning, only to have Tim Holtz follow with a deep home run to give the Sabres a 12-10 advantage. Springfield could not complete the comeback as it dropped the 14-12 decision.

Mike Cole had a no decision as he let up nine earned runs in five innings of work. Chris Collard suffered the loss as he went 4.1 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits. Schmaltz finished 2-6 with 3 RBI, while Carhart went 3-4 with three runs scored.
