No. 4 Women’s Gymnastics Splits Tri-Meet with SUNY Cortland and Southern Connecticut

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., February 19, 2006- Springfield College junior Jillian Silverman (Ipswich, Mass.) placed first in the uneven bars with a score of 9.425 as the Pride, ranked fourth in GymInfo’s latest Division III poll, finished second in a tri-meet with SUNY-Cortland and Southern Connecticut State University this afternoon at Blake Arena.

The Pride compiled 181.000 total team points in the meet, while first-place Southern Connecticut, ranked third in GymInfo’s latest Division II poll, scored 181.250. Cortland, ranked eighth in the latest GymInfo’s Division III poll, finished the meet with 175.975 total points.

SC captured the top three spots in the floor exercise with contributions from sophomore Kerry McGowan (East Lyme, Conn.) (9.650), junior Heather Tuden (Londonderry, N.H.) (9.575) and sophomore Cara Chadbourne (New Salem, Mass.) (9.500).

Cortland State senior Luisa Gutierrez (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) took first place in the vault (9.575) while Southern Connecticut sophomore Bethany Jeffords (Amherst, Mass.) won the balance beam competition with a score of 9.400. Jeffords and teammate Erika Pysh (Plainville, Conn.) shared first in the all-around with a score of 36.400.

Springfield College improves to 4-4 overall on the season and next travels to MIT for a meet on Saturday, February 25, in a 1 p.m. start.
