Women's Soccer Shuts Down RPI, 3-0

Caitlin Sawczuk Box Score

Troy, N.Y. – September 20, 2008 - The Springfield College women's soccer team netted three first half goals, including Caitlin Sawczuk's (Plainville, Conn.) tally just 1:55 into the game as the Pride picked up a 3-0 win on the road over previously-unbeaten RPI on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Renwyck Field.

With the win, the Pride improve to 4-2 on the season, while the Red Hawks drop their first game of the year and move to 5-1 overall..

Sawczuk got the scoring started in the second minute. She picked up a loose ball at the corner of the RPI penalty area and lofted a shot over the outstretched arms of Red Hawks goalkeeper Meghan White (Kingston, N.Y.) for a 1-0 lead.

The Pride struck again in the 10th minute, this time on a cross from freshman midfielder Jen Jahoda (Lebanon, Conn.), which found Suzanne Silva (Ludlow, Mass.) at the top of the box. Silva took the ball down and blasted a shot past White for a 2-0 advantage.

Springfield sophomore Brittany Collins (South Windsor, Conn.) closed out the scoring in the 41st minute as her 45-yard strike sailed into the upper-right corner of the net.

The Red Hawks, who nearly scored late in the first half, had a number of chances in the second half, but could not find the target. Freshman Alexandra Fontanetta (Neshanic Station, N.J.) paced the team with three shots, including one on goal.

White, who falls to 4-1 on the year, made six saves for Rensselaer, while Pride senior goalie Sue Jenney (Agawam, Mass.), who is now 4-2, had two stops.

Springfield returns to action on Wednesday evening when it takes on local-rival Amherst College. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 pm.
