No. 2 Nazareth (N.Y) Holds Off No. 11 Men's Lacrosse, 12-10, In Season Opener

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March. 5, 2005 – Springfield College senior attackman Shawn Cofrin (Derry, N.H.) scored three goals, but it was No. 2 Nazareth (N.Y.) College holding off the No. 11 Pride, 12-10, in the men’s lacrosse opener for both teams this afternoon on Benedum Field.

Nazareth (1-0) sophomore attackman Bryan Coon (Webster, N.Y.) tallied four goals and an assist, while freshman midfielder Greg Kanellis (Cortland, N.Y.) and Ryan Hotaling (Syracuse, N.Y.) each were credited with two goals and an assist for the Golden Flyers.

A pair of Cofrin goals and another by senior midfielder Adam Cost (Camillus, N.Y.) gave the Pride (0-1) a 3-1 lead with 5:22 remaining in the first quarter. Two-straight Nazareth goals, followed by Cofrin’s third goal of the quarter, made the score, 4-3, in favor of the Pride after the 15 minutes of play.

Nazareth scored three unanswered goals in the second quarter to lead, 6-4, with 3:35 to play in the half, but a 3-1 Pride run knotted the score, 7-7, at halftime.

The Golden Flyer defense took over in the third quarter, holding SC to only one goal. Tallies by Coon and Hotaling only 38 seconds apart, gave Nazareth a 9-7 advantage with 4:10 on the clock. Cost’s second goal of the game brought SC to within a goal with 3:32 remaining in the quarter, but Coon’s fourth goal less than a minute later gave the Golden Flyers a 10-8 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

Nazareth controlled the ball and the clock for most of the fourth quarter. A Hotaling goal with 3:49 remaining made it a three-point game, 11-8, before SC junior attackman Taylor Brown’s (Portsmouth, R.I.) second goal of the game kept SC within striking distance, 11-9, with 3:31 to play. The Golden Flyers answered 34 seconds later with a goal by junior attackman Ryan Maciaszek (Fairport, N.Y.) to all but seal the game. SC senior midfielder Mark Maitland (Salem, Mass.) closed out the scoring with 2:39 to make the final score 12-10.

Springfield sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Cloutier (South Hadley, Mass.) made 16 stops for the Pride, while Nazareth junior goalie Alex Civalier (Rochester, N.Y.) was credited with 15 saves for Nazareth.
