SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Dec. 4, 2006 - The Springfield College Men’s and Women’s indoor track teams competed in the 2006 Wesleyan Invitational Indoor Track meet at Bacon Fieldhouse in Middletown, Conn. this past Saturday (Dec. 2). It was a non-scoring meet.
Springfield freshman Nikki Hay (Norwalk, Conn.) finished first overall in the women’s long jump (5.03), triple jump (10.51), and 55-meter dash (7.68) events. SC qualifiers for the women’s 55-meter dash also included senior Julie Ferdella (Leicester, Mass.), who finished third with a time of 7.79, and freshman Laura Clagg (Foxboro, Mass.) who finished fifth, recording a time of 7.93.
SC also had the top runner in the men’s 55-meter dash, as freshman Steve Headley won the event with a time of 6.48, allowing him to qualify for the NCAA's. Headley also won the men’s 200-meter dash at the invitational, recording a time of 22.81. Junior Tim Rehm (Waldrick, N.J.) also qualified and competed in the 200-meter dash for the Pride, finishing sixth in 23.64.
Aside from Hay, other freshman SC women were also among the top finishers in many of Saturday’s events. In the women’s 400-meter dash, freshman Nicole Reynolds (Riverside, R.I.) finished third with a time of 1:02.11. Freshman Catherine Croce (Wallkill, N.Y.) placed fifth in the women’s 500-meter run, completing the race in 1:27.03.
SC had arguably its best showing in the women’s 800-meter run. Sophomore Katie Parente (Torrington, Conn.) was the first Pride runner to complete the event, placing fourth with a time of 2:37.55. Freshman Emma Lang (Woodstock N.Y.) (2:38.30), Allison Vander Werff (Golden Bridge, N.Y.) (2:38.39), and senior Tracy Hayes (Seekonk, Mass.) (2.41.33) then finished in succession, placing sixth, seventh, and eighth respectively. In the women’s 1000-meter run, Pride junior Alyssa Brigham (Penacook, N.H.) finished second, clocking a time of 3:18.45. Freshman Nicole Palmison (Plymouth, N.H.) competed in the women’s 5000-meter run for SC, placing fourth with a time of 21:44.60. In the women’s 3000-meter run, junior Lara Dalidowitz (Southington, Conn.) recorded a time of 11:56.72, good for sixth place. Dalidowitz also participated in the women’s high jump event for SC, resulting in a third place finish of 1.51. Pride sophomore Kayla Robertson (Peace Dale, R.I.) finished sixth in the high jump (1.41m), while junior Ashley Palmer (Holyoke, Mass.) finished eighth in the same event (1.41m). Robertson also participated in the women’s triple jump, placing fifth with a distance of 9.67.
Also competing with Hay and Robertson in the women’s triple jump was freshman Kari Manning (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) and Becky Sither (Scarborough, Maine). Manning placed third, recording a distance of 10.00 meters while Sither finished seventh with a result of 9.43. Junior Maxine DeVeaugh (Patterson, N.Y.) was the only SC participant in the women’s weight throw. DeVeaugh placed fifth in the event with a final distance of 11.22. In the women’s shot put, senior Rachel DiSaia (Waterford, Conn.) placed second overall for SC with a distance of 10.67.
In the men’s 400-meter dash, SC junior Dan Giampietro placed fifth overall, clocking a time of 54.05. Top finishing runners for SC also included sophomore Eric Nacsin (East Longmeadow, Mass.) who placed second in the men’s 1000-meter run (2:37.97), and senior Peter Ferraro, who placed third in the men’s 3000-meter run (9:36.06).
Pride senior Jeff Cogan (Walworth, N.Y.) won the men’s high jump event with a final result of 64". In the men’s long jump, Cogan placed third (21-0 1/4) while sophomore teammate Steve Blanch finished fourth, recording a distance of 21-0. Blanch also competed for SC in the men’s triple jump, placing third in the event (41-6). Men’s shot put was also won by a Pride athlete. Senior Alex Kampersal (Natick, Mass.) placed first overall in the invitational with a distance of 50-11 1/2. In the men’s weight throw competition, junior John Lewis (Fitchburg, Mass.) placed fourth (47-6).
