SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 8, 2006 – Springfield College’s men’s and women’s lacrosse teams received news last night of their NCAA Tournament fate. As league champions, both knew they were headed to the NCAA Division III championships, but they just did not know all the details, including pairings, sites, dates and times.

Here’s the rundown:

On the men’s side, Springfield learned that it will play a second-round NCAA Tournament game this Saturday (May 13) at Middlebury College at 1:00 p.m. The Pride will enter with a 13-4 record, while Middlebury will enter with a 12-3 mark. Earlier this season, Springfield defeated Middlebury in a high-octane match by a score of 11-10 at Springfield’s Benedum Field. Middlebury, last year’s NCAA Tournament runner-up, was ranked fourth nationally at the time.

Only 20 teams are in this year’s NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse championship. There are four first-round games to be played Wednesday, thus Springfield is already guaranteed to be one of the Sweet 16. Last Saturday, Springfield won its fourth straight Pilgrim League title by defeating Western New England College, 12-11, in double overtime.

On the women’s side, Springfield had known for over a week that it was NCAA Tourney-bound. On Sunday, April 30, SC had beaten Wheaton, 15-11, to win its second straight NEWMAC title. As for the NCAA Tournament, Springfield (12-5) was pleasantly surprised to learn that it will host a first-round game versus Dickinson College (14-5) this Wednesday, May 10 at 4:00 p.m. at Benedum Field. Dickinson College is located in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The winner of this game will then play against Salisbury University in Salisbury, Maryland, this Saturday, May 13 at 11:30 a.m. in a Sweet 16 contest. There are 24 teams in the 2006 NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse Championship.
