Wrestling Rises to No. 3 in New England

Ron Fusco Springfield, Mass. -- February 2, 2010 -- The Springfield College wrestling team, following a great weekend that included three dual-meet wins over nationally-ranked teams, has risen to No. 3 in the latest New England Wrestling Association weekly rankings. In addition, nine Pride wrestlers are now ranked in the NEWA Top Eight in each of the 10 individual weight classes.

Williams, which just won the NEWA Team Duals held at Springfield College on January 24, remains in first place with 140 points and with all 14 first-place votes. The remainder of the Top 10 includes Wesleyan (100 points), Rhode Island College (84), Roger Williams (70), Bridgewater State (43), Plymouth State (42), Trinity (32), and Southern Maine (27).

Among individuals, Springfield has collected one second, one third, two fourths, four fifths, and one eighth in the 10 weight classes.

In second among NEWA individuals is freshman Joe Grippi (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) at 133 pounds. In third is junior Ron Fusco (Billerica, Mass.) (see photo) at heavyweight. The two fourths include sophomore Ryan McGilvray (Manalapan, N.J.) at 149, and freshman Jeremy Burns (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) at 184.
