Springfield's Sam Carney Named NEWMAC Rookie of the Year in Women's Tennis

Sam Carney Springfield, Mass. -- October 27, 2009 -- The New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference has announced that Sam Carney of Springfield College has been named the 2009 NEWMAC Rookie of the Year in women's tennis. Carney was also named the Second Team All-Conference representative at No. 3 singles.

Carney becomes the first Rookie of the Year from Springfield College in NEWMAC women's tennis history.

A native of Franklin, Mass., Carney made quite a splash in her freshman year competing at No. 3 singles for the Pride. She finished with only one loss in dual-match play, finishing at 6-1 overall. In NEWMAC play, she finished with a record of 5-1 in dual matches, including 4-1 at No. 3 singles, and 1-0 at No. 4 singles. All her victories but one came in straight sets.

In NEWMAC doubles play, Carney teamed with senior co-captain Funmi Olowookere (Woonsocket, R.I.) to finish with a 2-3 mark.

"We're very pleased that Sam was named Rookie of the Year," said first-year Springfield head coach, Tim Losee. "She truly deserved it. It also represents a very positive step in our program."

Earning the other major NEWMAC women's tennis awards were Marie Watanabe of Wellesley as Athlete of the Year, and Lynn Miller of Wheaton as Coach of the Year.
