Men's Soccer Drops Overtime Decision at Home to Coast Guard, 2-1

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., September 23, 2006 – Springfield College sophomore Joe Greenwood (Pelham, N.H) scored his second goal of the season 18:57 into today’s match against the Coast Guard Academy Bears in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Brock-Affleck Field.

Despite Greenwood’s efforts, a late Coast Guard goal forced overtime, and the match ended in a 2-1 overtime loss for the Pride. The defeat drops SC to an overall mark of 2-5-2 and 0-2 in conference play.

The 1-0 margin appeared as if it would lift Springfield College to its first conference victory of the season, but the Bears continued to keep pressure on the Pride. In the second half, Coast Guard came out firing, holding an 8-3 edge in shooting and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. With less than two minutes in regulation (88:06) sophomore James Toohey (Temple Terrace, Fla.) notched the Bears’ first goal to send the match into overtime. He was assisted by classmate David O’Brien (Seminole, Fla.).

Coast Guard quickly gained control of possession in the overtime period. Only two minutes into the third period (92:19), senior midfielder Chris Toussaint (Shenrocke, N.Y.) put in the golden goal to lift the Bears over the Pride, and improve Coast Guard’s overall record to 5-1-1. The win also marks the Bears’ first NEWMAC win of the year.

Reigning NEWMAC Player of the Week, goalkeeper Tim Olah (Glastonbury, Conn.) , recorded two saves and allowed just one goal for Coast Guard.

Pride goalie, junior B. J. Sturdivant (Bear, Del.) , notched four saves in today’s match, three of which came in the second half.

Springfield College men’s soccer travels to Amherst College on Wednesday, September 27th, for a non-conference contest. The Pride will take the field against the Lord Jeffs at 4:30 p.m.
