NORTON, Mass., September 24, 2005 - Springfield College sophomore forward Brittany Veazie (Dexter, Maine) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 26th minute of action (25:09) as the No. 9 Pride defeated Wheaton College in the teams' New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) openers, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon, September 24, at Clark Field.
Veazie netted the game-winner and her fifth score of the season as SC rushed up-field while the sophomore found the left side of the cage after a short scramble in front to give the Pride an early 1-0 advantage. The Pride improves to 7-1 overall on the season and 1-0 in NEWMAC play. Close games have been kind to SC this season, as Springfield is 4-1 in one-goal matches and 3-0 in overtime contests.
With 12 minutes left in the match, Springfield nearly doubled its lead when sophomore Eileen Jenkins (Gorham, Maine) sent a shot through Lyon keeper Emily Fiskio's legs, but junior Shea Clarke defended the goal line and knocked the ball away. The senior netminder recorded another stop soon thereafter when Pride senior Sarah Brooker (Auburn, Maine) rattled a shot off both of Fiskio's leg pads.
Wheaton's last scoring opportunity came with less than two minutes left. Freshman Alisa Ardito received a long pass just beyond midfield from junior Elizabeth Reimers and streaked toward the net with a defensive player close by, but sophomore keeper Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, Conn.) slid out to contest the rush and Ardito pushed a shot wide from just inside the circle. Kaplan played well for SC in goal, recording seven saves to go along with her third shutout of the season.
The Pride will next host Trinity College in non-conference action on Thursday evening, September 29, in a 7:00 p.m. start.
