Boxscore

MIDDLEBURY, Vt., September 12, 2006 – Middlebury College, ranked 10th nationally in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll, opened its 2006 season on Kohn Field with a 2-0 non-conference win over Springfield College, ranked 11th in the same poll. The Panthers improve to 2-0 on the year while the Pride drops its first decision of the season, falling to 3-1 overall.

Nina Daugherty opened the scoring just 5:33 into the game as she scored after a scramble in front with a quick feed from Marnie Rowe. Neither team would score through the remainder of the half, leaving Middlebury with a 1-0 advantage after the first 35 minutes of action.

Forwards Brittany Veazie (Dexter, Maine) and Allie Eisele (Walton, N.Y.) were denied by Middlebury goalkeeper Meg McGillen after quick shots following a penalty corner, while McGillen stuffed another penalty corner just 30 seconds later.

Junior goalkeeper Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, Conn.) kept it a one-goal game for SC at the 13-minute mark, as she denied Dana Rye from close range. The Panthers broke through late in the game, as Rowe scored on a reverse flick down low to give Middlebury a 2-0 lead with just 29 seconds left in regulation.

McGillen ended the game with 10 saves to earn the shutout, while Kaplan made three stops for the Pride.

SC will next return home to face non-conference foe, Connecticut College, in a 7:00 p.m. start on Thursday evening, September 14th, at Benedum Field.
