NFHCA Recognizes Field Hockey As Top-Ranked Academic Team in the Country

Springfield College Field Hockey Springfield, Mass. - March 20, 2014 - The Springfield College field hockey team was honored for its efforts in the classroom by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA), being named the top academic team in the country.

The Pride posted a team GPA of 3.59, earning the 2013 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Division III National Academic Team Award. Springfield was ranked No. 1, Stockton College finished second in the nation with a team GPA of 3.57, while Eastern University, Kean University and Salisbury University tied for third with a 3.54.

Springfield also won the award as the nation's top academic team during the 2010 season.

The Pride also had 21 student-athletes named to the 2013 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad. The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2013-14 academic year. Those honored include: Olivia Cabral, Mary Casey, Taylor Chicoine, Jennifer Clark, Christina DeGirolamo, Rebekka Donovan, Sarah Ducharme, Taylor Friedman, Kelly Gallo, Elizabeth Hart, Sarah Kelly, Abbie King, Jillian MacDonald, MK Murray, Linnea Quist, Jamie Raccosta, Hayden Riley, Abigail Rist, Emily Rodgers, Victoria Stollmer and Mikayla Wysocki.

Springfield had five student-athletes earn the 2013 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Division III Scholars of Distinction honor. The outstanding student-athletes recognized as Scholars of Distinctionhave achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher through the first semester of the 2013-14 academic year. Those recognized from Springfield College were Mary Casey, Rebekka Donovan, Taylor Friedman, Abbie King and Jillian MacDonald.

Majors represented from those student-athletes who were honored include Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Physical Education, Applied Exercise Science, Athletic Training, Occupational Therapy, Sport Management, Communication Disorders, Sports Biology, Secondary Education, and Psychology.

This year, the Pride garnered a handful of other honors for their play on the field and their performance in the classroom. Senior MK Murray (Killingworth, Conn.) was named a Division III All-Star by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), both Murray and senior Kelly Gallo (Westfield, Mass.) were named to the Longstreeth/NFHCA D-III All-Region teams, Murray, Gallo and Olivia Cabral (Sayville, N.Y.) earned NEWMAC All-Conference honors and nine members of the team earned the conference's all-academic honor.
