DELAWARE, Ohio, November 19, 2005 -- Springfield College senior Meg Young (Hurley, N.Y.) earned All-America honors as she finished eighth overall at the NCAA Division III National Cross Country Championships this afternoon in Delaware, Ohio, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.

Young earned her first All-American honors (top 35 places) by traversing the muddy six-kilometer course in a time of 22:26 in the 40-degree, clear weather. Young got out with the leaders in the first half-mile of the race and bounced between eighth and fifteenth place throughout the race. The lone SC harrier in the race hung with the lead pack of sixteen through the first five kilometers as there was no clear leader at that point. The pack started to spread out slightly over the 1,000 meters and Young finished just slightly behind the seventh-place finisher in the 213-runner field.

In 2003, Young took 63rd at her first NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships, and did not qualify in 2004 due to injury. Young finishes her impressive cross country career with an eighth-place finish, the best finish ever for a Springfield College runner at the National Championship event. Marisa Clapp finished twelfth in 2001 over a five-kilometer course, while Barbara Swallow finished ninth in 1999 at five kilometers. Young becomes Coach Jim Pennington’s 53rd All-American.

Over her four-year cross country career, Young has been named to the All New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) team four times, the All-Division III New England Team twice (2003, 2005), and now ends her cross country career with All-America honors to add to her accomplishments.
