Boxscore

WORCESTER, Mass., November 2, 2006 – Junior forward Tony Distasio (Burlington, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal at the 70:06 mark to lift sixth-seeded Springfield College over third-seeded Clark University this evening in the first round of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament. The first-round upset advances the Pride into the semifinal round.

Distasio took advantage of breakaway down the middle of the field when he shot the ball at Clark’s keeper Matt Talbot. Talbot deflected the shot, but Distasio followed up the deflection and netted his fifth and most important goal of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Ryan Driscoll (Wilmington, Del.) also played a key roll in SC's victory by recording five saves and marking his third shutout of the year.

The victory notched the Pride's second upset shutout over the Cougars this season. On Friday, October 6th, SC blanked Clark, 2-0. Clark ends its season with an 11-4-2 record. Two of the Cougar’s four defeats in the 2006 season came at hands of the Pride.

Both teams tallied 13 shots apiece. Clark University had the advantage in corner kicks, 11-3.

No. 6 Springfield (6-11-2) will face No. 2 Babson College in the NEWMAC semifinals at Wheaton College in Norton, Mass. The teams will square off at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 4th.
