Baseball Drops Final Two In Greater Phoenix Invitational

Johns Hopkins Box Score

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – March 20, 2008 - The Springfield College baseball team lost its final two games of the Greater Phoenix Invitational with losses to Bowdoin and Johns Hopkins on Wednesday and Thursday.

The losses drop the Pride's record to 3-5 after its Arizona swing.

In the Pride's 11-6 loss to Bowdoin on Wednesday, starter Jimmy Lisowski got roughed up on the mound, lasting just 2 1/3 innings, while allowing eight earned off 11 hits. Jacob Feist came in relief and tossed the final 5 2/3 innings, allowing just three runs, while scattering seven hits. Jamie Mackie led the offensive charge with a pair of singles and a run batted in, while teammate Joe Kropa went 2-for-4 with a home run. Springfield fell behind early in the game, trailing 8-1, after three innings of play.

Springfield would drop an 11-4 decision to #10-ranked Johns Hopkins in its final game of the Invitational on Thursday. Johns Hopkins struck first with a run in the top of the third, only to have the Pride respond with a pair of runs after Tim Romeo scored on a wild pitch and Kropa crossed the plate after an RBI single by Casey Federico.

The Pride moved ahead by two runs in the fourth after Rex Cone doubled and then later scored on a fielder's choice.

However, things fell apart in the sixth inning when the Blue Jays tallied six runs off the Pride's Justin O'Brien to take a 7-3 lead. JHU tacked on another three runs in the eighth to take control of the game for good.

Federico finished with two RBI singles in the game and Kropa went 2-of-3 with a pair of runs scored. O'Brien was charged with the loss after lasting just 1/3 of an inning, allowing six earned runs off five hits. Travis Turgeon tossed the first six innings for Springfield, scattering five hits and allowing just one run.

The Pride returns home on Friday and will open up conference play on Saturday afternoon with a twinbill against WPI. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 12:00 pm.
