“I certainly have some big shoes to fill as there have been some great people who have led this committee in the past,” said Brock. “While my duties will not take away from my primary responsibility of being the men’s basketball coach and a professor at Springfield College, this is an exciting opportunity for me. What makes Springfield College unique is that there are always people who want to get involved and help; I have had great support from colleagues and students.”
Brock will head up the committee that ultimately decides who will play in the 2010 NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament. The committee consists of the Regional Chair from each of the eight (8) regions. Brock will maintain his role as chair of the Northeast Region as well.
There is a great deal of work and preparation that the committee must perform in deciding who will compete for the upcoming Division III National Championship.
The work for Brock and the committee begins when, starting in February, four weekly rankings are tabulated leading up to the start of the championship. Those rankings are formed through looking at team’s strength of schedule, common opponents, head-to-head records, record versus ranked teams, and home and away wins and losses. From there, the committee decides what teams will earn Pool B and Pool C berths. Those squads will join Pool A teams, which qualified automatically by winning their conference championship.
Once the tournament selection is made, the committee then puts together the tournament bracket that ensures the best national tournament possible. Factors that weigh heavy during this evaluation include geography and travel distance for teams.
When the selections are announced on Monday, March 8th, Brock and his committee will conduct conference calls throughout the country for schools that will host and play in the tournament.
With Brock at the helm, the committee will continue to look for ways to enhance the overall experience at the NCAA Division III Final Four. This year, the venue for the Final Four will take place at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Virginia.
