Marietta, Ohio -- May 23, 2009 -- Junior Nikki Hay of Springfield College placed fourth in the triple jump at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Women's Track & Field Championships this afternoon at Marietta College. Hay had finished fifth in the triple jump at the Indoor nationals this past March. She had placed third last May in the Outdoor nationals in the same event.
Hay's distance this afternoon was 39-5 in feet and inches (or 12.01 meters). The winner was Akaye Aimable, a senior from Wartburg College, who also won the indoor title this past winter. Aimable's winning distance today was 39-10. Hay had entered with a season-best distance of 40-1 1/4, the second-best distance in NCAA Division III this outdoor season. A native of Norwalk, Conn., Hay had four leaps that were remarkably similar today before fouling on her last two attempts. Her first four tries this afternoon, in meters, were 12.01, 11.99, 12.00, and 12.00. Last year, at the Outdoor nationals, Nikki had a leap of 39-3 3/4.
As a result, Hay gained five team points for the Pride, allowing SC to tie for 53rd place of 79 scoring teams.
Two other Springfield women had also competed in these NCAA Division III Outdoor Women's Track & Field Championships on Thursday. They were freshman Cherelle Allen (New Britain, Conn.) in the long jump, and senior Kelsey Bishop (Warwick, R.I.) in the hammer throw. Allen finished 11th overall in the long jump with a leap of 17-7 1/2 (or 5.37m). Bishop finished 18th (of 19) with her best toss of 153-2 (or 46.68m),
This concludes the Springfield College varsity sports year in 2008-2009, not only in track & field, but in all varsity sports.
