Springfield, Mass. - May 3, 2014 - Three members of the Springfield College men's track & field team earned All-New England honors on Saturday on the final day of the New England Division III Track and Field Championships.
Ryan O'Connell (Marlborough, Mass.) finished seventh overall in the 1500 meter run to earn All-New England honors with a time of 3:57.53 while Brandon Hammerstrom (Auburn, N.H.) took seventh in the shot put. The sophomore was the top finisher in his flight, and finished seventh overall with a toss of 47-01. Also earning All-New England honors was Parker Ashton-Youngs (Tolland, Conn.) who finished eighth in the javelin with a throw of 160-01.
Springfield finished 20th overall in the team standings with 13 points. MIT won the meet with 159.83 points, Bates finished second with 79.33 points and Bridgewater State placed third with 67 points. Coast Guard (62) and Southern Maine (40.50) rounded out the top five.
Also competing for the Pride was Sam Baker (Durham, Conn.) who finished 12th in the high jump with a leap of 6-00 even. Springfield's 4x100 relay team of Marcus Brown (Randolph, Mass.), Jacob Buhelt (Falmouth, Maine), Brian Stacy (Belchertown, Mass.) and Ken Toal (Newtown, Conn.) finished 14th overall with a combined time of 44.46.
Individually, Buhelt also ran in the 200 meter dash, finishing 19th overall with a time of 22.94.
In the 4x400 relay, the final event of the championship, Springfield placed 16th overall. The team of Buhelt, Toal, Jacob Simons (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Tim Johansmeyer (Norton, Mass.) ran a combined time of 3:31.17.
