2004 Men's Soccer Season Preview

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 3, 2004 -- Despite the graduation of nine seniors, head coach Peter Haley is excited about the chances of his 2004 squad comprised with 10 returning lettermen and a group of 13 promising freshmen.

“I am looking forward to the upcoming season,” said Haley, who is in his 20th year on the SC sidelines. “We struggled last season, especially offensively, and that needs to change if we want to regain our edge and re-establish ourselves as one of top programs in New England.”

Tri-captains Mark Buschini, Justin Pepoli and Zack Pereira will be called upon to lead the young squad. Buschini and Pereira are mainstays in the back while Pepoli will see action at back as well as the midfield.

Sophomore Matt Sullivan solidifies the offensive attack after finishing second for the Pride in scoring (12 points) during his freshman campaign. The striker corps will also consist of veterans Andy Parker and Ben Silliman, while freshmen Colin Cook andTony Distacio will be looked upon to make an impact.

After a great spring season, junior keeper David Minkoff will get the nod in goal, with freshman B.J. Sturdivant waiting in the wings.

Rounding out the key returners is Brandon Szczesniak, an intelligent, versatile player who was a stable influence at the wing back position last season. Watch for sophomore Matt Lee to step up and be a force in the midfield after a great off-season. Senior Andy Parker will also be looked upon to have an impact on the ‘04 Pride.

Other newcomers to keep an eye on in the midfield are Peter Bianco, Steve Croft, Jay Daglis, and Paul Lepak, while Mickey Kilmartin, Mike Burke, Ted Feeley and Henry Ruggeiro should complement the turning veterans in the backfield.
