Men's Lacrosse Breaks Into USILA National Poll, Ranked 10th

Devin Abad Devin Abad Springfield, Mass. - March 3, 2014 After winning its first three games of the season, the Springfield College men’s lacrosse team has vaulted into the national spotlight. The Pride has been ranked 10th in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) National Coaches Poll on Monday afternoon. This marks the first time as a Division III program that the Pride has started the year 3-0. The last team to accomplish that feat was the 1995 team that advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship.

The Pride were also recognized by Lacrosse Magazine, getting ranked 9th in the weekly poll.

After a season-opening 20-9 victory over the Fighting Scots of Gordon College, the Pride traveled to Rochester, N.Y. to take on the then No. 10 ranked Nazareth College Golden Flyers. Behind a stellar performance between the pipes from goalkeeper Connor Nash (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) in which the senior posted 18 saves, the Pride came out on top, 11-10.

Starting the season off 2-0 and heading down to Hoboken, N.J. to face Stevens Tech, the Pride defeated the Ducks 14-10 behind a five-point performance from junior attackmen Dylan Sheehan (Massapequa, N.Y.) including three goals and two assists. Junior Bryce Serriello (Cape Cod, Mass.) netted four goals while Nash came up big again in the cage, making 13 stops. Senior captain Ryon Lynch (Frederick, Md.) tallied two goals and two assists, while senior Ryan Murphy (Mansfield, Mass.) added a pair of goals and a helper in the victory.

The road won’t get any easier for the Pride, as they will host cross-town rival Western New England University on Saturday. The Golden Bears will go into the contest with an 0-2 record, falling to Keene State, 12-10, and No. 3 Stevenson, 14-5. The Pride have bested the Golden Bears the past two seasons, beating them at home in 2012, 10-5, and at Western New England just one year ago, 11-10. The game is set to start at 12:00 p.m.
