Bilik Named Winner of the NABC Metropolitan Award

Bilik Named Winner of the NABC Metropolitan Award Houston,Tex. -- April 6, 2011 -- Ed Bilik, former director of athletics and head coach at Springfield College, was named winner of the prestigious Metropolitan Award by the National Association of Basketball Coaches during recent ceremonies at the AT&T-NABC Guardians of the Game Awards show at the Cullen Theater at the men's basketball Final Four.

The Metropolitan Award is presented annually for long and outstanding contributions to men's college basketball. Among the former recipients are Mike Krzyzewski, Bob Knight, John Thompson, Norm Stewart, Dean Smith, Jim Boeheim, and Jim Calhoun. Others who have won the Metropolitan Award who have Springfield College affiliations were Ed Hickox (1949), Arthur Schabinger (1955), John Bunn (1961), and Ed Steitz (1974).

Bilik was the head basketball coach at Springfield College from 1966 to 1986, during which he compiled an outstanding 322-196 overall record for a .622 winning percentage. He succeeded Steitz in that role. He then became the director of athletics at Springfield College from 1989 through 1999. It was in 1999 that he retired from Springfield College after 40 years of service as an undergrad, coach, AD, and faculty member.

But it was his service to the Basketball Rules Committee for which he may be best remembered. Overall, he was part of this committee for a part of six different decades -- from 1969 through 2010. He was a member of the rules committee from 1969 through 1984. He was the Research Chairman of the rules committtee from 1972 through 1984. He was Assistant Basketball Rules Editor for three years in that span. Finally, he was selected as Secretary Rules-Editor of the Basketball Rules Committee for 14 years, from 1997 through 2010.

Charlie Brock, current head men's basketball coach at Springfield College, current member of the Board of Directors of the NABC, and himself a former member of the NCAA basketball rules committee, presented Bilik at the Awards Show. "It was a special thrill to be able to introduce my coach and mentor for the NABC's Metropolitan Award," said Brock. "Ed has meant so much to the NABC, the NCAA, and to Springfield College. No one more than Ed has been a truer Guardian of the Game of basketball."

Bilik finally retired from the rules committee in May, 2010. At the time, the NCAA presented him a plaque which included the following inscription: Over 375,000 games played; Over 500,000 rule survey responses compiled; Over 5,000 rules interpretations given; Over 250 rules memorandums and play situation documents distributed; Over 2,000 hours of committee meetings.

The plaque also read: In 14 years of service as the NCAA Basketball Secretary Rules-Editor, Ed has been the glue that connected the history and traditions of basketball with what the game will become in the future. Ed's passion, dedication, and unrivaled protection of the game's rules have left an indelible positive mark on the NCAA and collegiate basketball. Through all the statistics, free throw percentages, survey responses, and court marking distances, one number symbolizes the job Ed has executed......1.

At the time, Bilik was quoted, "I enjoy the game, but I never thought I would do something like this. My mind doesn't work that way. I'm more of a conceptual thinker. But when you deal with the rules, you deal with every detail. I grew into enjoying this, and it was because I loved the game."

Bilik is now retired and living in Skidaway Island in Savannah, Georgia.
