Baseball Shocks No. 10 Trinity, 10-9, in 13 Innings

SC 10, Trinity 9 (13 innings)

HARTFORD, Conn., April 27, 2004 – Springfield College sophomore right-hander Matt Rodovick (Stamford, Vt.) pitched 6.2 innings in relief and scattered five hits to earn the win leading the visiting Pride to a stunning 10-9 victory over Trinity in 13 innings.

The Pride (13-10) registered its 10th win in 12 outings. Since April 16, SC has beaten the top three teams in New England (Eastern Conn., Williams and Trinity) and two teams ranked nationally in the top-10. The Bantams (26-6) entered ranked No. 1 in New England and No. 10 in Division III. The Pride also beat fourth-ranked Eastern Connecticut, 8-7, on April 16.

SC rallied from a 7-4 deficit with five runs in the seventh inning. Trailing 9-7 in the ninth, Trinity scored twice to send the game into extra frames.

SC junior outfielder Mike Burns (Wynanstkill, N.Y.) scored the game-winning run in the top of the 13th inning after walking with two outs. Burns stole second base, then scored when junior Anthony Gorneault (Springfield, Mass.) hit a bounding ball to shortstop and the throw skipped past the first baseman. Sophomore Scott Samolewicz (Florence, Mass.) hurled a perfect 13th inning to record his fifth save.

Burns was 2-for-5 with three runs scored, and Gorneault went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Sophomores James Miner (Methuen, Mass.) and Derek Yvon (East Longmeadow, Mass.) both collected two hits for the Pride, and Yvon scored twice.
