Distasio's Hat Trick Leads Men's Soccer Past Brandeis, 4-3

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - October 17, 2007Tony Distasio (Burlington, Conn.) came off the bench in the first half and recorded three goals to lead the Springfield College men's soccer team to a 4-3 victory over Brandeis in non-conference action Wednesday evening at Brock-Affleck Field.

The win brings Springfield to 7-7-1 on the season while the Judges drop to 6-7-2.

Distasio wasted no time taking advantage of his time in the game as he tallied a goal on his first play after he entered the game. Off a Jeremy Scheer (Enfield, Conn.) corner kick that crossed the box, Chad Bonnell (Hazlet, N.J.) settled the ball on the right side and sent a cross back into the box. Distasio made no mistake as he hammered home the cross into the top right corner of the net from three yards out at the 24:22 mark.

The Judges answered back just over six minutes later when Alex Mithoefer collected a thru-ball from Evan Duval an tucked a shot inside the right post past Springfield keeper B.J. Sturdivant (Bear, Del.).

Sturdivant got his revenge two minutes later when the goalie recorded his first assist of the season at the 32:51 mark. After making a save, Sturdivant booted his punt 85 yards to a streaking Distasio. With a defender blanketed on his back, Distasio’s left-footed shot from 20 yards out found the back of the net over the outstretched arms of Taylor Bracken to put Springfield back on top, 2-1.

Exactly three minutes later, Distasio made the Judges pay for a miscue in the back as he knocked home his third goal in 11 minutes. As Brandeis was attempting to switch fields in the back, a misplay by a defender led to Distasio all alone with the ball from 20 yards out. The senior forward took a few touches and blasted the ball into the right side netting. At the half, the Pride led Brandeis, 3-1.

At the 68:30 mark, the Judges cut the lead to one after Adam Gutman received a short corner from Corey Bradley and slipped the ball into the goal from 18 yards out past a screened Sturdivant.

Brett Drake (Enfield, Conn.) scored the eventual game-winner for Springfield 37 seconds later. A Brandeis foul gave the Pride possession just inside the midfield line. Scheer sent a long ball in the box which Drake elevated and headed into the net past Bracken.

Duval tacked on another goal for Brandeis with 13 minutes remaining in the contest to cut the lead to one. The Pride held off several chances from the visitors down the stretch, including a shot by Joe Levitan as time expired that Sturdivant snuffed out.

The Judges outshot the Pride, 15-14, in the game and held an 8-3 advantage on corner kicks. Sturdivant finished with seven saves in the game while Bracken ended with four stops.

The Pride look to win their third-straight when it hosts MIT in its conference-finale on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
