Springfield Takes the Zenaty Field Hockey Invitational over Southern Maine, 2-0; Brockport Captures the Consolation

Springfield, Mass. -- September 5, 2010 -- MVP Meg Bradley broke a scoreless tie with 21 minutes remaining to lead the host Springfield College field hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Southern Maine today in the championship game of the Dottie Zenaty Invitational at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field. SC is now 2-0 on the young season. Earlier, Crystal Mott scored early in the second half to lead her Brockport team to a 1-0 victory over Worcester State in the consolation

The championship game had been 0-0 for the first 49 minutes until Springfield was able to take advantage of a penalty corner. Bradley, who has a powerful shot, blasted one from the top of the circle past a sprawling Southern Maine goalkeeper with exactly 21 minutes remaining in the contest. The assist went to junior forward Alexa Carlson.

Just over 11 minutes later, the Pride added an insurance goal by freshman forward Kelly Gallo of nearby Westfield. The marker came with 8:22 remaining. It was Gallo's second goal in two days. She had also scored the second goal in yesterday's eventual 3-2 victory over Worcester State.

For SC, junior goalkeeper Allison McCarthy earned the shutout, and was credited with four saves. For Southern Maine, a pair of freshmen split the goalkeeping duties. Kayla Kennedy played the first 35 minutes, keeping SC off the scoreboard and making three saves. Emily Downing played the final 35 minutes, giving up both Pride goals. She was credited wth four saves.

Springfield will continue its opening six-game homestand when it hosts Keene State Tuesday at 7 pm.

Crystal Mott scored early in the second half to lead her Brockport field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Worcester State today in the consolation game of the Dottie Zenaty Invitational at Springfield College's Amos Alonzo Stagg Field. With the win, Brockport is now 1-1 on the season, while the tough-luck Lancers of Worcester State fall to 0-2.

Following a scoreless first half, Mott, a freshman forward, tallied just two minutes and 26 seconds into the second half for what proved to be the game's only goal. Mott was assisted by freshman forward Megan Usher at the 32:24 mark.

From there it was all up to sophomore goalkeeper Kasey Schreiner to keep Worcester State off the scoreboard. Schreiner was credited with a total of five saves in addition to the shutout.

Kat Masterjohn, a junior goalkeeper, allowed just the one goal to the Golden Eagles. She was credited with four saves. Yesterday, the Lancers fell, 3-2, to host Springfield College with the difference coming in penalty strokes.

Brockport outshot Worcester State, 6-5. Junior back Lauren Daley of Worcester State also made a defensive save.
