Brian Harris Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - April 26, 2011 - The Springfield College baseball team dropped its final home game of the 2011 season to local-foe Amherst College, 10-0, on a gorgeous Tuesday afternoon at Berry Allen Field. John Schmaltz tallied two hits in the contest for the Pride.

The loss drops Springfield's record to 10-20 on the season, while the Lord Jeffs improve to 19-6.

Playing in its first game since April 16, the Springfield bats struggled as they totaled just four hits in the contest. Other than Schmaltz's two singles, Sean Smith and Frank Calabrese each produced singles. Steve Forbes took the loss for Springfield as he gave up eight runs, seven earned, off 12 hits in six innings of work. Greg Mayo pitched an impressive ninth inning as he struck out the side.

Amherst pounded 15 hits in the contest, led by Alex Hero's 3-for-5 effort. Taiki Kasuga tallied two RBI in the game, as did Mike Samela after crushing a two-run homer in the third inning. Starter Jeff Keenan earned the win as he allowed just one hit in five innings while striking out three.

The Lord Jeffs wasted little time scoring as they plated a run in the first. A Kasuga groundout plated Hero, who led off the game with a double to left center. The visitors added two more in the third off Samela's round-tripper, and blew open the game in the fourth with four more runs. Amherst led off the frame with three straight singles and benefited from a Springfield error to open up a 7-0 lead.

Amherst added another in the fifth as Brain Merrigan came around to score after a leadoff triple. The final two runs came in the seventh on RBI singles from Kasuga and Bryce Einhorn.

Springfield will hit the diamond again on Wednesday evening when it squares off Elms College at 7:30 pm.
