Boxscore

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 24, 2004 – Springfield College junior midfielder Adam Cost (Camilus, N.Y.) scored four goals to lead the No. 18 Pride to a come-from-behind win over Trinity College, 12-9, this afternoon on Benedum Field.

Trinity (3-1) erupted for three goals in less than three minutes to start the game, including a pair by senior attackman James Skiff (Portland, Maine), who finished with a game-high six goals. Skiff notched his first goal only :08 seconds into the contest, before sophomore midfielder Roddy Tilt (Katonah, N.Y.) scored at the 13:41 mark. Skiff’s second tally came :06 seconds later as the Bantams led, 3-0, with 13:35 remaining in the quarter. Trinity sophomore midfielder Chad Burdette (Owings Mills, Md.) increased the first-quarter lead to 4-0 with a goal at the 7:57 mark.

Springfield (2-3) got on the board at the 5:07 mark, as senior midfielder Craig Gibson (South Salem, N.Y.) scored off a pass from senior defenseman Jim Mitchell (Wilbraham, Mass.) to cut the lead to 4-1. Junior midfielder Kevin Warnock (Somers, Conn.) added another goal for the Pride at the :33 second mark, as Trinity led, 4-2, after the first quarter.

Cost’s first goal came at the 11:09 mark of the second quarter, to bring SC within a goal, 4-3, but two-straight Bantam goals put the visitors up, 6-3, with 4:48 remaining in the first half. Cost brought the Pride back within two with his second tally of the game off a Gibson assists at the 1:32 mark, as Trinity held a 6-4 advantage at halftime.

Skiff scored his third goal of the game, man-down, only :12 seconds into the second half to put Trinity back up by three, 7-4, but it was the only offense the Bantams could muster in the third quarter. Four unanswered Springfield goals, punctuated by a behind-the-back goal by sophomore attackman Taylor Brown (Portsmouth, R.I.), gave the Pride its first lead of the game, 8-7, with 2:31 remaining in the quarter.

Senior defenseman Sean Harrington (Suffern, N.Y.), a team captain, opened the fourth-quarter with a goal only :12 seconds into the final period, to put SC up, 9-7. While the Springfield defense continued to shut down the Trinity offense, Cost’s third goal with 12:04 remaining, and a tally by junior attackman Shawn Cofrin (Derry, N.H.) at the 3:56 mark, gave the Pride its largest lead of the game, 11-7.

A Skiff goal at the 3:41 mark, and Cost’s fourth goal of the game, made the score, 12-8, with :58 seconds remaining in the game. Skiff’s last goal came with :34 seconds on the clock to make the final score, 12-9.

Trinity senior goalie Geoffry Shaw (Charlotte, N.C.) made 12 saves for the Bantams, while SC freshman goalie Kyle Cloutier (South Hadley, Mass.) was credited with 11 stops for his second career victory.
