Senior Andrew Wright Fires a 68 at Taconic Golf Club, One Shot Off the Course Record

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., September 26, 2006 – Led by senior Andrew Wright, the Springfield College men’s golf team has begun its 2006 campaign in fine form. Last weekend, the team competed in the Williams College Invitational at the venerable Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, Mass., finishing in a respectable tie for ninth out of 20 teams. Before that they competed in the Duke Nelson Invitational at Middlebury College, finishing 15th out of 24 colleges.

A Hampden, Mass., native, Wright has been a key contributor to the SC men’s golf team thus far. This past weekend at Taconic during the Williams Invitational, Wright shot the team-low and second-round low 68 on the day at the par-71 course. This round by Wright was just one stroke off the course record that was first set about 50 years ago. Wright combined his three-under par second round 68 with a first round 77, totaling 145 (+3), leaving him in a tie for third place out of 103 golfers.

Those who have shot the course record of 67 (from the back tees) at the Taconic Golf Club include Dick Tworig, Tom Aaron, Lloyd Monroe, and Wayne Pence. Joining this group of record holders over the weekend was Stephen Goodridge, last year's Division III national champion who won the Williams Invitational this past weekend with a two-day total of 138, good for four under overall.

In the Pride’s first tournament of the year, Wright shot the team’s low round in the first day of competition at the Duke Nelson Invitational, carding a 76 on the par-71 course. Wright then shot an 84 on day two, leaving him with a two-day total of 160. That score was second best on the team, and helped the Pride to a 15th-place team finish out of 24 competing schools.

Wright attended Cathedral High where he competed for three years on the varsity golf team. During his time at Cathedral, Wright collected All-Western Mass honors twice and also finished second at the state tournament. After Cathedral, Wright spent a year at Division I-Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn., where he competed on the men’s golf team before transferring to SC.

Wright and the men’s golf team will next be in action on Wednesday, October 4th, at the Elms Invitational, starting at 11:00 a.m.
