Chris McCarthy and Jon Davis Named to NEWMAC All-Conference Teams

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 3, 2006 – Springfield College senior shortstop Chris McCarthy (East Longmeadow, Mass.) has been named to the 2006 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Baseball All-Conference First-Team, in an announcement made at the conclusion of the conference’s annual post-season meeting (May 2).

Senior right-hander Jon Davis (Ludlow, Mass.) has been named to the NEWMAC All-Conference Second-Team in the same announcement, as voted upon by the NEWMAC coaches.

McCarthy, a graduate of Longmeadow High School, had an extremely successful senior campaign for the Pride. The shortstop led the team in virtually every major offensive category; batting average (.336), runs (35), hits (49), home runs (three), runs batted in (21), total bases (64), and slugging percentage (.438). McCarthy also stole a team-best 14 bases in 17 attempts this season. In the NEWMAC, McCarthy finished the season tied for second in runs scored and all alone in third place in stolen bases.

Davis, a graduate of Cathedral High School and transfer from UMass, finished his senior season with an impressive 1.93 earned run average (ERA). Davis finished with a 1-0 overall record, making 14 appearances throughout the year for SC, as he hurled 23 and one-thirds innings with five saves. The senior allowed just 13 hits, five earned runs and 12 walks while striking out 28 batters. Davis held the opposition to a stingy .157 batting average, as he finished second in the NEWMAC in saves this season.

The Pride finished its NEWMAC regular-season with a solid 8-4 record, as SC was the second-seeded team in the NEWMAC Tournament. Unfortunately, after its dramatic 2-1 first-round win at home against Clark University (Apr. 27), the Pride lost two-straight NEWMAC Tourney games to WPI and MIT on Saturday, April 29th, ending its season with a 16-18 overall mark.
