Men's Gymnastics Falls to Army in the 2007 Season Opener

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – January 20, 2007 – Army’s Mike Assenmacher captured the all-around to lead his men’s gymnastics team to victory over Springfield College by a score of 203.300 to 186.750 this afternoon at SC’s Blake Arena.

With the win, Army becomes 1-1, while Springfield falls to 0-1.

A junior from Milford, Michigan, Assenmacher had a fine day for the Black Knights. Not only did he win the all-around with a score of 50.650, he also finished first in the vault (8.550), first in the pommel horse (8.700), and in a tie for first in the floor exercise (8.500). Assenmacher placed third in the rings (8.600), fifth in the high bar (8.050), and sixth in the parallel bars (8.250).

Army won all six events as a team. The Black Knights took the floor exercise, 33.500 to 31.250; the pommel horse 33.300 to 31.300; the rings 34.650 to 32.550; the vault 32.750 to 30.450; the parallel bars 35.250 to 32.500; and the high bar 33.850 to 28.700.

Another who had a great day for Army was senior Joe Baumann (Brookfield, Wisc.), who placed first in the high bar (8.700), first in the rings (9.100), and in a tie for first in the parallel bars (9.000).

Army senior Brandon Whitten (Biddeford, Me.) also tied for first in the floor (8.500), and senior Mike Oliveira (South Glastonbury, Conn.) tied for first in the parallel bars (9.000).

For Springfield, the top finishers included sophomore Andy Kelly (Marston Mills, Mass.), and freshman Matt Tocchio (Braintree, Mass.), who placed second and third in the all-around with scores of 43.750 and 43.400, respectively. Kelly tied for fourth in the parallel bars (8.400), finished sixth in the rings (8.200), and tied for sixth in the floor exercise (7.950).

Others who finished in the top six in any event for the Pride included senior Aric Hines (Greensboro, N.C.), who placed second in the pommel horse ((8.500), sophomore Matt Bolognese (Stony Brook, N.Y.), who placed second in the rings (8.950), junior Matt Davis (Southboro, Mass.), who placed fourth in the pommel horse (8.400), and sixth in the high bar (7.550). In addition, junior JJ Ferreira (Naugatuck, Conn.) finished tied for fourth in the floor exercise ((8.050), sophomore Ken Sloanhoffer (New Windsor, N.Y.) placed fifth in the vault (7.950), and freshman Keith Stumpf (Williamsville, N.Y.) placed sixth in the vault (7.850).
