Mike Griffin Impresses in the UMass-Dartmouth Cross Country Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 17, 2007) - Mike Griffin had a strong performance as Springfield's men and women competed at the UMass Dartmouth Cross Country Invitational this past Saturday.

As a team, the men finished ninth of 31 teams with a score of 291 points. Trinity bested the competition with 55 points, followed by Southern Maine (121), Brandeis (123), Amherst (127), UMass-Lowell (127), Keene State (137), Tufts (164), and Coast Guard (192).

The women had a similar showing by coming in 10th out of 30 teams with 258 points. For the women, Amherst won handily with only 42 points as none of their runners finished below 19th. Keene State finished behind the Lord Jeffs with 145 points, followed by Stonehill (160), Trinity (186), Brandeis (206), UMass-Lowell (214), Wellesley (217), Tufts (218), and Connecticut College (231).

The star of the Invitational for Springfield was Mike Griffin who finished 7th out of 255 runners. The junior from Scarborough, Me. finished the highest of any runner from a NEWMAC institution with a time of 25:26, which also earned him the Maroon Club male player of the week honor from Springfield College.

Others who competed for the men included freshman Troy French (Antrim, N.H.) (69th, 26:59), freshman Brian Fuller (Ludlow, Mass.) (70th, 26:59), senior Jeff Bartlett (West Newbury, Mass.) (78th, 27:10), sophomore Mike DeCrescenzo (New Milford, Conn.) (81st, 27:17), freshman Kyle Moriarty (North Kingston, R.I.) (96th, 27:47), freshman Matthew Geanacopoulos (Ludlow, Mass.) (111th, 28:20), and freshman Andrew Mulvey (Merrimack, N.H.) (130th, 28:44).

The women also had a strong showing by senior co-captain Alyssa Brigham (Penacook, N.H.), who finished 23rd overall with a time of 19:05. This is the second straight week Brigham has led the Pride's women in competition.

Others who competed for the women included sophomore Amanda DiPaolo (Phillipstown, N.Y.) (26th, 19:11), freshman Lacey Cartier (York, Me.) (35th, 19:26), senior Jess Borsotti (Northampton, Mass.) (85th, 20:28), freshman Amanda Mullen (Claremont, N.H.) (103rd, 20:53), freshman Mollie Berndt (Burlington, Wisc.) (149th, 22:00), freshman Rachel DiMattia (Kensington, Conn.) (152nd, 22:05), and senior Katelyn Rudolph (Amherst, N.Y.) (155th, 22:09).

Both the Springfield men and women will be at the Williams Invitational in Williamstown, Mass. next Saturday (Sept. 22).
